Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Toni Morrison Dies At Age 88

Author Toni Morrison has died at the age of 88. Over five decades, she chronicled the experience of African Americans in her novels. Her first book, The Bluest Eye, came out in 1970 and tells the story of a black girl who wants blue eyes like white girls. She went on to pen Beloved, about a mother who murders her child to save the girl from a life in slavery. It won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988. A decade later, Oprah Winfrey portrayed the lead role in a film based on the book.

Morrison, who was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, was the first black woman to receive the Nobel Prize in literature. Her publisher, Knopf, confirmed the news of her death. While a cause has not been released, they did state that Morrison passed away at Montefiore Medical Center in New York on Monday night.
