You think Hollywood film studios would have learned something about minority representation when Emma Stone played a half Chinese character in Aloha and got dragged for it. But it's 2020 and cis actors like Halle Berry are still sought after to play transgender characters.
Berry was on an IG live with hairstylist Christin Brown when she shared news she had signed on to play a woman who transitions into a man for an upcoming movie. The conversation was part of Brown's #TextureTalkTuesday series.
"Who this woman was is so interesting to me," Berry explained of her character. "That will probably be my next project, and that will require me cutting all of my hair off."
The news was not well-received because of the recent push for more transgender actors to be cast in films.
The issue went deeper since Berry kept misgendering the character while discussing the movie.
Eventually, Halle Berry decided she should step away from the role.
Shows like Pose and Euphoria show that trans actors are finally taking up creative space but they're obviously still facing limitations. Representation matters.
