Florida Power and Light wants to add a temporary surcharge to customers' bills next year.
FPL filed the request yesterday with the Florida Public Service Commission. The company says it needs to raise rates to recover over a billion dollars in costs from hurricanes Debby, Helene and Milton.
Rates for customers using a thousand kilowatt hours would rise about $12 per month if the request is approved.
It would take effect in January and last through 2025.
