WATCH: Tampa Police Break Up Downtown Street Takeover

TAMPA -- While state troopers and Hillsborough deputies were shutting down a street takeover in the county, police in the city of Tampa were taking their own action against a similar event downtown over the Labor Day weekend.

Just before 2 a.m. Sunday (September 1st), police say they caught a car entering an intersection near the Tampa Convention Center, doing burnouts and slides, then heading south onto Harbour Island. 18-year-old Elian Michele faces street takeover and narcotics charges, and the BMW he allegedly drove has been impounded.

Tampa police had stepped up traffic enforcement activity over the Labor Day weekend, focusing on the Courtney Campbell Causeway. Officers made almost 12-hundred traffic stops (1183), issuing more than a thousand warnings (1,012) and more than five hundred (531) citations.
