Halsey recently revealed on TikTok, "basically i have a song that i love that i wanna release ASAP but my record label won't let me." And explained further that it is due to marketing. Basically, they want Halsey to create a viral moment on TikTok before allowing them to release the song. I mean, they kinda did right? Anywho, Halsey also explained that nearly every artist is told to do the same. You can read more about the situation here.
While fans are speaking up for Halsey, there's one artist that is as well, that has a history with bad label management. JoJo , the "Too Little Too Late" and "Leave (Get Out)" singer, filed suit against her label, Blackground and Da Family, in 2013 for derailing her career amongst other claims. You can find the full list of her arguments here. JoJo won this lawsuit in 2020 and was finally able to release her third album - nearly fifteen years in the making.
Having experienced this, JoJo is not afraid to speak out. On Saturday, May 28th, she posted a TikTok from the point of view of "major record labels to their artists in 2022", singing about how they want their artists to go viral. She gives "kudos to halsey and all the other artists raging against the machine and telling the truth". Watch it below.
