Megan Phelps-Roper: I Grew Up in Westboro Baptist Church; Here's Why I Left

The Westboro Baptist Church is infamous. There are photos of their activities all over the news and across the internet. The organization is notorious for extreme anti-homosexuality protests, in addition to hate speech against Catholics, Muslims, Jews, American soldiers, and politicians. It's not unusual to hear about the organization protesting the funerals of American soldiers and waving bright picket signs emblazoned with the message "GOD HATES FAGS." 

Megan Phelps-Roper grew up in a family that was part of the Westboro Baptist Church. She was given one of those signs to hold before she was even old enough to read it. As an adult, when she was finally exposed to other perspectives online, she realized that she didn't want to be a part of the world into which she had been indoctrinated.
