Of the 50 safest cities in New Jersey, three are in Sussex County. A new study from The National Council For Home Safety and Security lists the safest cities in the state and ranks Sparta Township 7th, Hopatcong 11th, and Vernon Township 30th.
To create the list The National Council For Home Safety and Security looked at FBI crime statistics, eliminated cities with populations under 10,000 and eliminated any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI. Then they looked at violent and non-violent crimes and created a crime rate using the number of crimes per 1,000 population.
