Browns Creek Bridge out; Access to Amelia Island limited to Shave Bridge

DUVAL COUNTY - If you want to get to Amelia Island, you'll no longer be able to take Heckscher Drive; the Browns Creek Bridge is out in northern Duval County.

Residents or visitors will need to go all the way up to State Road 200 to use the Shave Bridge to get to Amelia Island until the Mayport Ferry returns to service.

The bridge was open for a brief period early Tuesday morning until authorities working on it realized there was a structural deficiency with the bridge and closed it to traffic. It will need to be prepared until it can be reopened.

With the bridge out, commuters and day trips throughout the area will be impeded. To get to the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve, it'll take a drive up through Yulee. Huguenot Memorial Park is also going to be hard to get to, as will Little and Big Talbot Islands.

The bridge suffered heavy damage from Hurricane Irma as it passed by the First Coast.

As soon as First Coast News hears when the bridge is expected to reopen, we will update this story.
