Shawn Mendes Will Be Kicking Off The 'MTV Unplugged' Reboot

MTV has announced that it is officially rebooting one of the most iconic television shows of the 90's, "MTV Unplugged." The series gained massive popularity with audiences after it began airing in 1989, where artists would do acoustic renditions of their own songs as well as covers. Previous performers have included Nirvana, Jay-Z, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, and even Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus. The new era of Unplugged is set to debut September 8th, but we haven't even told you the best part yet.

Shawn Mendes will be kicking off the premiere with an intimate, acoustic performance at the Ace Theater in Downtown L.A. The 19 year old was inspired by a clip of Pearl Jam performing on the show in 1992, which got him interested in the idea of putting on a show himself. He said "it wasn't so much about the commercial, showman side of it; it was really about the music."

Shawn is very passionate about the philosophy behind the live set, and has been "working [my butt] off just trying to figure out the most beautiful way to play these songs in a smaller, stripped-down way that still feels as impactful." He is putting a lot of heart into creating the performance, saying that "if I can do this right, then it will be a moment for me- where people can really understand and see me as a musician and a singer, where I'm coming from."

It sounds like this might just be one of Shawn's best performances, and we are so excited to hear and see him perform such an intimate show. Will you be tuning in on September 8th?
